This book, published by Circo de Ideias, offers a theoretical analysis of what Terry Smith identifies as the “Visual Arts Exhibitionary Complex”. In this book, the art historian and writer maps the institutional and quasi-institutional structure of contemporary art that can be seen all over the world. At the same time, Terry Smith investigates a powerful form of curatorial activism that is emerging in the exhibition complex and which he calls Open Strike.
The book includes a preface by Steven Henry Madoff, written as part of the launch of the Thoughts on Curating series, launched by the School of Visual Arts in New York, where the essay was originally published, while Margarida Saraiva contributes with an afterword in which she rehearses the establishment of parallels between languages, territories and paradigms.
