In Conflict vol.1
depA architects, Carlos Azevedo, João Crisóstomo, Luís Sobral, Miguel Santos (eds.)
This book, published by Circo de Ideias and edited by depA architects, Carlos Azevedo, João Crisóstomo, Luís Sobral and Miguel Santos, presents the research carried out within the scope of the Portuguese representation at the 17th International Architecture Exhibition of the Venice Biennale.
The book directly answers the question posed by Hashim Sarkis, general curator of the Biennale Architettura 2021: ‘How will we live together?’ revisiting a selection of processes of Portuguese architecture in the democratic period shaped by a comprehensive public debate between political power, the press, and civil society.
The city and the territory, as arenas of conflict, are collective constructions where dissent – an implicit condition for the plurality of democratic space – gives shape to the production of architecture. Through an exhibition and nine debates, In Conflict considers the role of architecture as a public, political, and ethical discipline, in the hope of fulfilling a common future.
This book, the first volume of a two-part editorial project, covers the exhibition on the main floor of Palazzo Giustinian Lolin in Venice. Just as throughout the rooms of the Palazzo, these pages revisit seven processes of Portuguese architecture that address the issue of housing.
